The LPCA is a Public Benefit Domestic Nonprofit Corporation

The Litchfield Plains Cemetery is the largest, and one of the oldest cemeteries in Litchfield.  It is the only actively managed cemetery left in town.  The cemetery and its records are an invaluable source for those studying the history and genealogy of Litchfield.  It is of a very personal importance to the relatives and descendants of those interred there.  The Town’s Civil War Memorial is located within the bounds of the cemetery.  The older parts of the cemetery are, indeed, a form of museum.  The cemetery grounds are widely used by the town’s people as a place to walk and socialize.  It is regulated by an up-to-date set of by-laws and all lot owners are voting members of the Litchfield Plains Cemetery Association.  The Cemetery Association holds an Annual Meeting in October and an optional spring meeting in June.  The Board of Directors which governs the Cemetery is elected annually at the meeting in October.  Although the Cemetery has existed for over two hundred years no early copy of a Charter or Certificate of Incorporation has been found.  On October 20th, 2016 the LPCA was officially certified by the State of Maine as a Public Benefit Domestic Nonprofit Corporation.   The LPCA was thus enabled to receive tax-deductible contributions from members, friends, and supporters of charitable organizations.  The LPC is a large and very well-maintained cemetery which results in many thousands of dollars of annual expenses.  Lot sales and cremation burials, the only cemetery driven source of income, covers only a small percentage of the expenses.   The cemetery must rely on the generosity of its friends and supporters if it is to continue in operation as a private enterprise.
